How to support someone who’s depressed – and why this is core to equality, diversity and inclusion

With a huge nod to John Lewis’s helpful video informing us about how to engage in interested, not intrusive (or offensive) discussions about difference* I thought I’d share my thoughts on what it is, and is not, OK to say to someone suffering with depression.

It can be difficult to know what to say and do when someone close to you is experiencing poor mental health. You don’t need to be an expert, and you aren’t responsible for “fixing” the problem or the person. The keys are to:

·      listen (and not shy away from the topic);
·      be supportive;
·      persist in keeping lines of communication open; and
·      signpost specialist support** where appropriate.
